Researchers from all scientific disciplines, at all stages of their careers, regardless of age and nationality, are eligible for Marie Skłodowska Curie Actions (MSCA). These actions, or funding opportunities, are available to individual researchers as well as to consortia comprising knowledge institutions and companies. Calls are published annually by the European Commission for various actions, with different rules for each action.
The Marie Skłodowska Curie Actions have always been very popular. Many applications were submitted and the success rate – particularly for the networks – was not very high. The European Commission will come up with proposals to regulate the pressure on this programme.

Aim
The European Commission aims to develop researchers’ research skills, whilst also offering them better career prospects. The mobility of researchers is a crucial element of the programme. Funding should make it more attractive for researchers to both come to, and stay in, Europe.
Target Audience
Various target groups can be distinguished, depending on the type of Marie Sklodowska Curie Action:
- Early-stage researchers
- More experienced researchers
The 5 Actions:
- MSCA Doctoral Networks
European training networks for the training of early-stage researchers. This program component was previously called Innovative Training Network. In Horizon Europe, there have been changes and the name has also changed. - MSCA Postdoctoral Fellowships
International mobility for more experienced researchers (more than four years of research experience) - MSCA Staff Exchanges
Inter-sectoral and international staff exchange programme - MSCA Co-Funding of Regional, National and International Programs
Co-financing of regional, national and international scholarship programs - MSCA and Citizens
Outreach and awareness-raising activities in order to stimulate both public recognition of, and interest in, academic research.
Budget
- The budget for MSCA is €1.8 billion for the first two years of the programme (2021 and 2022)
- Funding mainly consists of:
o an allowance for the researcher’s salary (subsistence allowance and mobility allowance)
o a budget for research and training costs
o reimbursement of management costs - The total budget depends on the number of researchers to be hired
Inquiry
Calls for proposals are published annually by the European Commission for the various Marie Curie actions. The rules on who can submit proposals and for which researchers the fellowship is suitable vary according to the funding.
To be eligible for one of the calls, the researcher and/or organization must submit an application via one of the open calls.
Deadlines
The deadlines differ per open call. These can be found here.
