The aim of the Innovation Impulse is to promote the development and flow of talented researchers. For researchers with increasing experience there are the following components: veni, vidi and vici.
Talented researchers who belong to the top 10-20% of their peer group (vici top 10%). Veni is aimed at researchers who did not obtain their PhD more than three years ago, vidi at researchers who received their PhD between three and eight years ago and vici at researchers who received their PhD no more than 15 years earlier. There is an extension scheme for parenthood.
Veni, vidi and vici are successively grants for an innovative research topic, setting up an innovative research line and setting up a research group in an innovative research area.
Maximum contribution from NWO: veni € 250,000, vidi € 800,000 and vici € 1,500,000 for only the direct personnel and material costs, including the costs of time spent by the applicant. In the case of vidi and vici, additional staff must be recruited.
A tender is launched annually for all three components. Since 2018, pre-registrations must first be submitted for veni and vici. In all probability, this will apply to vidi from 2019.
The main criteria are the scientific quality of the applicant and the research proposal. Application in science and/or society is also part of the assessment, unless it can be made clear that application is not possible.
